An exciting and varied entertainment scene is in store this weekend. Activities include plenty of good music, a chili contest and tributes to the late race car driver Dale Earnhardt.
Here's a quick rundown of the lineup.
Stock car racing fans can participate in several tributes to Dale Earnhardt, killed Feb. 18 in a crash during the Daytona 500 race.
Fans can sign a memorial book for Earnhardt from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Wilder-Fountains funeral home, 4890 S Suncoast Blvd., Homosassa Springs. The book will be sent to Earnhardt's family.
The S&D Collectibles booth at Howard's Flea Market on U.S. 19 south of Homosassa Springs will also be hosting a card-signing for the Earnhardt family.
Another Earnhardt tribute will be part of tonight's stock car races at Inverness Speedway on U.S. 41 S at the fairgrounds. Racing begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 seniors and students to age 17 and $2 children under 10. Call 726-9339.
The Beverly Hills International Festival takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Lakeside Park on Civic Circle. The festival features lots of ethnic foods and entertainment.
A Civil War battle re-enactment is today and Sunday at a large field about 5 miles north of Crystal River on U.S. 19. The re-enactment camp is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, with mock battles scheduled at 2 p.m. today and Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for children 8 to 18 and under 8 free.
Take a trip back in time at the Citrus County Art League, which is hosting a scholarship benefit dinner at 6 p.m. today at the center, 2644 N Annapolis Ave., off County Road 486 west of Hernando. The theme is "Dinner with Napoleon." Guests will join Napoleon on the battlefield after his victory at Marengo. Dinner will be chicken marengo, with Napoleons for dessert. Marian Fox will give a presentation about Napoleon. Dinner is by reservation only. Cost is $25. Call Dottie at 628-6839.
The Withlacoochee River Chili Cookoff begins at 2 p.m. today at Turner Fish Camp on Hooty Point near the end of Turner Camp Road in Inverness. Bring at least two quarts of chili, capable of being heated over an open fire. Entries deadline is 3 p.m. Live music by Leather and Lace. Call 726-0085.
A family comedy, Squabbles, concludes its run as dinner theater this weekend in the Hampton Room at Andre's Restaurant in Citrus Hills. Dinner is served at 5 p.m., and the performance is at 6:15 today. Sunday's times are meal at 1:30 p.m., show at 2:45. Call Andre's at 746-6855 for reservations.
Stagecrafters dinner theater presents That Was No Lady, That Was a Private Eye today through Monday at Sugarmill Woods Clubhouse. The play is a spoof of a Sam Spade or Phillip Marlow crime mystery. Show times through Monday are a social hour at 5:30, meal at 6 and show at 7 p.m. Sunday matinee begins with brunch at 1 p.m. and the show at 2. Meal and show tickets are $14.95. Call 382-3838.
Big band and swing music fans can enjoy the sounds of the 42nd Street Orchestra at 2 and 7 p.m. today at Curtis Peterson Auditorium, Lecanto. The band performs music from Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald. The concert is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Homosassa Springs. The event is a fundraiser.
The Inverness Antique Show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday at the Citrus County Fairgrounds Auditorium, U.S. 41 S, Inverness. Admission is $2.50.
