This weekBy CONNIE DREW © St. Petersburg Times, published February 25, 2001 TodayTAMPA AUDUBON SOCIETY: The Tampa Audubon Society will hold its monthly membership meeting at 3 p.m. in the Tampa Audubon's Resource Center at Lettuce Lake Park, 6920 E Fletcher Ave. Rich Paul, manager of Audubon's Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries will give a description of the natural history of South Pacific island paradises, such as Hawaii, French Polynesia and Easter Island. SENIOR CITIZENS FACILITY: State representatives Chris Hart, R-Tampa, and Bob Henriquez, D-Tampa, are seeking comments from the community about a proposal to build a facility to serve senior citizens in the Town 'N Country area. The Department of Elder Affairs is proposing the project for seniors 60 and over, particularly low-income, minority, socially or economically needy seniors, as well as physically or mentally disabled seniors. Written comments will be submitted to state officials in hopes of getting some state funding for the facility. Services at the facility will include adult day care, educational, social, health and recreational activities, nursing assessments, health monitoring, meals, snacks, nutrition, social work counseling and information and referral services. BLACK EMPHASIS MONTH: The University of South Florida, 4202 E Fowler Ave., is sponsoring several events in celebration of Black Emphasis Month. The events include the following: the History of Gospel Music Play at 7 p.m. in Cooper Hall, Room 103; the Gospel Explosion at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and a showing of the movie The Hurricane at 9 p.m. Wednesday on the lawn at Crescent Hill. MondayADULT CLASSES: Registration will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today through March 12 for adult and community classes at Gaither Adult and Community School, 16200 N Dale Mabry Highway. Registration for Conversational Spanish will continue until class starts on March 5; registration runs March 12 through April 3 for Computer Essentials for the Beginner (class starts April 2) and Microsoft Office (must have working knowledge of Windows 95 or 98, class starts April 3). Experts will discuss two new Hillsborough County schools, infrastructure improvements, a new mass transit center and routes and a new health center and answer questions and receive community input. WednesdayGOVERNMENT COMES TO NEW TAMPA: City Council member Shawn Harrison and county Commissioner Jim Norman will meet with New Tampa residents on Wedneday as guest speakers at the New Tampa Community Council's February meeting. The local politicians will be on hand to discuss the future of New Tampa, as well as growth issues facing one of the area's most rapidly expanding regions. NETWORK OF CHRISTIAN WOMEN: The Network of Christian Women will host its next monthly luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. The luncheon offers women of various ages and denominations an opportunity to socialize and enjoy an uplifting message. ANGER MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP: The Counseling Center at the Tampa Jewish Family Services will sponsor an anger management workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for four consecutive weeks. It begins today at the Tampa Jewish Community Center/Federation Community Campus, 13009 Community Campus Drive, off Gunn Highway. Cost is $10 per workshop. YMCA DANCE PROGRAM: The Bob Sierra Family YMCA, 4029 Northdale Blvd., is offering a dance program that will include an optional recital at the end of May. Weekly sessions will be on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for pre-ballet and tap (ages 3-5), intermediate ballet and jazz (ages 7 and over) and, intermediate ballet and tap (ages 5-7 and 7 and over). All children learn the dances and participate throughout the year. Cost is $20 per month for facility members and $25 after the 8th of each month. All students are subject to teacher placement. ThursdayTAI CHI CLASSES: The Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department is offering tai chi movement classes at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. The 90-minute wellness class, taught by Deno Kazan, will help you relax and reduce stress. Tai chi is an ancient form of therapeutic exercise that provides greater flexibility, increased balance and a sense of well-being. SaturdayYMCA ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN: The Bob Sierra Family YMCA and TSI Inc. will host the YMCA's 2001 Annual Giving Campaign from 7 to 11 p.m. The event, "Caribana," will be held at Heritage Harbor Country Club, 19502 Heritage Harbor Parkway, Lutz-Lake Fern Road. The fundraiser will feature dinner, dancing, a live auction and a chance to win $5,000 in a reverse drawing; you do not have to be present to win. A ticket for two is $100. The Annual Giving Campaign provides scholarships to children and families who cannot afford YMCA services without assistance. Also, it funds special programs for the physically challenged, adaptive sports programs for special-needs children, teen programs and learn-to-swim programs. TRIATHLON TRAINING: Bo Webster, who represented Team USA at the 2000 World Championships in Perth, Australia, is offering one-hour group triathlon training sessions at 10 a.m. on Saturdays in Carrollwood. Sessions will alternate week-to-week from swimming, biking, running and transitions. BOWL FOR KID'S SAKE: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is sponsoring its 20th annual Bowl For Kid's Sake at Crown Bowling Lanes, 5555 W Hillsborough Ave., today and Sunday. The fundraiser will also be held March 11 at Regal Bowling Lanes, 4847 N Armenia Ave. Team captains will choose four friends, relatives or co-workers for a five-person team. Each team member is asked to enter with a minimum of $100 in pledges; pledges may be for a flat sum or per pin amounts. The event, designed for kids ages 1 to 3, will feature the following activities: Kiddie Klassic (1-year-olds crawl, scoot or run through an obstacle course); Dress-up Derby (2-year-olds put on a basketful of clothes, on the corrected body parts) Toddler Turnpike (3-year-olds race on tricycles across the finish line) and, attend the Oh, Baby! Fashion Show. Other highlights will include fun crafts, games, informational booths and a goodie bag. There will be food and beverage stands. Looking aheadSTORYBOOK FESTIVAL: The New Tampa Junior Woman's Club will hold its annual Fairy Tale Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. March 4 at the Tampa Palms golf and Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd. Formerly known as the Storybook Tea Party, the child-oriented festival will have a Medieval theme. The event will feature arts and crafts, costumes, sword-fighting games a magic show and castle spacewalk. Tickets can only be purchased in advance. All profits will benefit the New Tampa Regional Library. tickets are $8 for children between the ages of 2 and 11 and $20 for adults.
