Highs and lows

Highs

LIFE OF DALE EARNHARDT: The memories.

THE LIGHTNING: St. Louis is among the contenders for the NHL's best record, but Tampa Bay left it singing the Blues on Tuesday, winning 3-2.

USF: Jim Leavitt has built the football program from the ground up. Giving him with a contract extension through the 2005 season is a nice reward.

TIGER WHO?: Joe Durant, a one-time insurance salesman, shot 36-under 324 to win the Bob Hope Classic by four shots. The Pensacola native, one of the PGA Tour's most accurate drivers the past three years, overcame negative thinking for his second win and broke Tom Kite's scoring record. Tiger, by the way, took the week off.

Lows

DEATH OF DALE EARNHARDT: The loss.

XFL: Things have gone so poorly for the fledgling football league in recent weeks that it gave away free (that's right, we said free) television advertising for Saturday's broadcast because of poor ratings. After a hot start, the XFL could be headed for a three count.

GARY SHEFFIELD: The Tampa native has three years and $31.5-million left on his Dodgers contract but already wants a new deal or a trade.
