HIGHWOODS PRESERVE -- The developers of a new shopping center say it will look more like Old Hyde Park Village than the strip centers along Dale Mabry Highway.

The shopping center, called the Walk at Highwoods Preserve, will attract high-end retailers, said Highwoods Properties vice president Skipper Peek.

"It'll be very pedestrian-oriented, . . . very Hyde Parkesque," he said.

Peek said a hotel likely will be included in the Highwoods Preserve area, which would cater to business people.

Peek wouldn't say which stores will be included, but he talked about a few things that won't be included. The shopping area won't have a supermarket or "big box" stores, such as Wal-Mart or Best Buy, he said.

The shopping center will be built near the new Muvico Starlight 20 theaters and the Intermedia Communications campus, near the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Interstate 75.

"It will not be a typical strip center," said David Freeman, president of Harrison Bennett Properties, who has worked on the project. "Architecturally, everything is integrated."

Peek gave a presentation about the shopping center at the New Tampa Community Council meeting Wednesday. Some residents said they look forward to having a shopping center where New Tampa residents can gather.

"I think it's great," said New Tampa Community Council President George Faugl. "If I had the money, I'd put in my own coffee shop."

He noted that some residents are concerned about the increased traffic the shopping center and hotel will bring. But he said growth is inevitable, and this seems to be the right kind of growth.

"Like it or not, it's going to come in. Let's get the high-end stuff," Faugl said. "I'd rather have something like a Barnes & Noble, rather than Florida Pawn."
