Chiefs check QB options

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Racing against a Friday deadline, the Chiefs must either rework Elvis Grbac's huge contract or find another quarterback.

On Monday, they were exploring both options.

The Chiefs have begun preliminary talks with the St. Louis Rams for quarterback Trent Green, agent Jim Steiner confirmed Monday. They also are working on restructuring Grbac's contract, which calls for a $10-million bonus if he's on the roster by Friday.

DOLPHINS: The Miami Herald reported the team is attempting to re-sign Olindo Mare, but expects the Redskins to make a run at the placekicker.

49ERS: Greg Olson will be quarterbacks coach after holding the same job at Purdue the past four years, the Contra Costa Times reported.

JAGUARS: Safety Carnell Lake restructured his contract, saving the team about $1.6-million on its overspent salary cap, the Florida Times-Union reported.

PANTHERS: Rick Smith, the agent for Donald Hayes, said the team will place a $1.15-million tender on the receiver before Friday's deadline to protect restricted free agents.

PATRIOTS: Drew Bledsoe's long-stalled contract talks with the team took an unexpected twist when the quarterback decided to leave agent Leigh Steinberg and cast his lot with Steinberg's former partner, David Dunn.

STEELERS: Hall of Famer Lynn Swann and teammate John Stallworth settled a lawsuit against a sports promoter before jury selection was to begin in Pittsburgh. The former receivers had sought more than $118,000, saying promoter Michael Mahone failed to pay them for an appearance at the Team of the Decade Reunion Weekend in 1999.

LEWIS SUED: Ray Lewis, Super Bowl MVP for the Ravens, was sued for $10-million in a wrongful death case stemming from a slaying outside an Atlanta nightclub 13 months ago.

XFL

NEW YORK -- UPN's XFL ratings are sinking, just not as fast as NBC's.

Memphis' 18-12 win against Los Angeles on Sunday got a 1.9 overnight rating and a 3 share on UPN, a 5 percent decrease from the 2.0 the previous week.

UPN's schedule for the league got a 4.2/8 overnight on Feb. 4 for the initial telecast, then slipped to a 2.8/4 on Feb. 11 and to a 2.0/3 for Feb. 18.
