Mutiny game paired with U.S. qualifier

The United States' World Cup qualifier against Honduras will be played Sept. 1 at RFK Stadium in Washington, part of a televised doubleheader involving the Mutiny, the U.S. Soccer Federation said.

The match will be the fourth of five home games for the United States in the final round of World Cup qualifying and the seventh of its 10 matches in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, or CONCACAF.

The match will kick off at 10 a.m. so that the United States will have more time to rest and prepare for another World Cup qualifier on Sept. 5 against Costa Rica in San Jose, Costa Rica, and still have the game nationally televised.

It will be the first of an ESPN2 doubleheader, with a Tampa Bay-at-D.C. United match to follow at 12:30.

ABC-TV offered the U.S. Federation an afternoon time slot on Sept. 2, but the team opted for the extra day of rest.

MORE SOCCER: Midfielder DaMarcus Beasley, hoping to play in his first World Cup qualifier, will miss Wednesday's game against Mexico because of a leg injury. Bobby Convey of D.C. United was called to U.S. camp to replace him. The game is the opener of the final of the CONCACAF region. ... New York/New Jersey will play an exhibition against Bayern Munich of Germany on May 26 at Giants Stadium. To fit the game in, the MetroStars postponed a regular-season contest against Kansas City, the defending MLS Cup champion. No new date has been scheduled.

TENNIS: Martina Hingis began her 179th week atop the WTA rankings after winning the Dubai championship, the fourth-longest streak since rankings started in 1975. The 20-year-old overtook Monica Seles' run of 178 weeks and extended her rankings lead on No. 2 Lindsay Davenport with her third tournament win of the season. Her next target is Chris Evert's mark of 262 weeks. On the men's side, Andre Agassi topped the ATP Champions Race for a fifth week in a row. ... No. 4 Mary Pierce withdrew before play began because of ankle tendinitis, and Magui Serna beat No. 6 Justine Henin 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) in the first match at the State Farm Women's Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. ... Wayne Arthurs upset fifth-seeded Sjeng Schalken 6-4, 6-4 at the Sybase Open in San Jose, Calif. ... Magnus Norman defeated Jeff Tarango 6-4, 6-4 in the $1-million Dubai Open in United Arab Emirates.

GOLF: Tiger Woods stayed atop the rankings for the 80th consecutive week. He tied for 13th place at the Nissan Open Sunday, three shots behind Robert Allenby, and has more than double the rankings points of No. 2 Phil Mickelson. Allenby improved 11 places to No. 27. Woods moved to within one week of Nick Faldo's 81-week stint as No. 1 from 1992-94, the second-longest after Greg Norman's 96 between 1995 and 1997.

COLLEGES: FSU softball players Robyn Gauger and Leslie Malerich were named ACC player and pitcher of the week, respectively.

TRACK AND FIELD: Maurice Greene, the Olympic 100-meter gold medalist and world-record holder, will compete in the USA Indoor Championships this weekend in Atlanta. ... The eight Germans who ran in the same race with former Olympic champion Dieter Baumann last weekend have been suspended by the sport's governing body. Baumann obtained a court order to compete at the German indoor championship in Dortmund despite a two-year international ban for drug use.

BOXING: Oscar De La Hoya, involved in a legal battle with HBO, will fight Arturo Gatti on the cable network March 24 when he returns from an eight-month layoff.

SKIING: The Finnish Ski Association said Janne Immonen failed a drug test at the Nordic World Championships in Lahti.

WRESTLING: All German wrestlers have been suspended internationally because Olympic champion Alexander Leipold competed despite a ban for drug use. Leipold was stripped of his gold medal after testing positive for nandrolone, a banned anabolic steroid.

FIGURE SKATING: Johnny Weir of the United States upset defending silver medalist Vincent Restencourt to win a qualifying group at the World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
