Chamber rewards businesses for caring
By JENNIFER GOLDBLATT © St. Petersburg Times, published February 28, 2001 NEW PORT RICHEY -- A financial services company with a handful of employees and a hospital with a staff of more than 1,000 have each been named Business of the Year for the ways they serve the community -- above and beyond the work week. The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday awarded Balkcom Associates Inc. and Community Hospital of New Port Richey Business of the Year in the small and large business categories. Richard and Carol Balkcom started their business eight years ago and have gotten involved with various community organizations, including Youth and Family Alternatives and the Trinity Rotary Club. "Right from the beginning, they were willing to pitch in and learn, and they've developed into real leaders in our community," said Joe Alpine, chamber president. Community Hospital has grown into a 414-bed facility since opening in 1971. The hospital supports Pasco-Hernando Community College, the Salvation Army, and American Cancer Society, among other organizations. "They started as a small general hospital and have changed with the needs of the community," Alpine said. Winners were chosen by a committee made up of leadership from the chamber. The Business of the Year Awards were sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times. Awards were made at a banquet Tuesday evening. Other Business Development Week awards went to: the District School Board of Pasco County; Nelson Pest Control; the Service Corps of Retired Executives; J.B. Starkey's Flatwoods Adventures; and Marchman Technical Education Center Culinary Arts Department.
