New telephone system billed as money saver
By Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 28, 2001 ZEPHYRHILLS -- The city of Zephyrhills recently installed a new phone system. Residents and city workers both are getting used to the change. "A year and a half ago we had somebody look at our system," said City Manager Steve Spina. "We had a number of different rates for long distance, from 5 to 11 cents a minute. We had old phones that were falling apart. We didn't even have voice mail. We wanted to try to do better." The new system cost the city about $35,000 to install. But Spina expects to save more than enough to pay for it in the long run. "We expect to save about $5,000 or $6,000 a year in long distance alone," he said. Also, on Thursday the city will connect with the statewide Suncom system, which links branches of Florida state and local government offices. Anyone who calls an old city number now will get a recording that tells the new number. The new general number for City Hall is 780-0000. Tuesday morning, city employees treaded through Spina's office, griping good-naturedly about the new system. "Any kind of change you implement is going to be resisted," he said. "I pretty much had to have a pep rally in this morning's meeting. We'll all adjust." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
