Lightning welcome in Khabibulin derby

Is the Lightning in the hunt for Coyotes goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin?

The rumors say yes, though Lightning general manager Rick Dudley would not confirm.

He also shot down the possibility of trading left wing Fredrik Modin, who would fit nicely with a team that, going into Wednesday night's game against the Bruins, had scored just 163 goals.

"We are not inclined to trade Freddie Modin," Dudley said.

He also said he was in no rush to trade this year's first-round draft pick, which could be a No. 1, or defenseman Paul Mara. Both were rumored to be part of the deal.

Dudley has spoken to new Coyotes general manager Cliff Fletcher, a former Lightning adviser.

"But that doesn't mean anything," Dudley said. "The first time I spoke to him was to congratulate him on getting the job."

Khabibulin is sitting out his second straight season in a contract dispute. He became expendable this week after Phoenix signed Sean Burke to a three-year, $9-million deal. Khabibulin was asking for a three-year, $12-million contract.

The Lightning, Rangers and Blackhawks have been mentioned as the most interested. But Fletcher said Tuesday night, "Anyone who wants to join in is welcome."
