Seattle loses in Ewing's MSG return

NEW YORK -- Patrick Ewing received a three-minute standing ovation and played the first three minutes like the Ewing of old.

There was little love for the big man after that, though, as the Knicks spoiled his Madison Square Garden return Tuesday by beating Seattle 101-92.

Chants of "Pat-rick Ew-ing" accompanied a loud and long ovation during pregame introductions. Ewing made his first three shots and had four early rebounds but the center didn't play well the rest of the way, exhibiting many of the traits -- bad hands, an increasingly inconsistent jump shot, a couple of dribbles off his feet -- that frustrated Knicks fans over the years.

RAPTORS 101, CAVALIERS 89: Rookie Morris Peterson made seven three-pointers en route to a career-high 29 points for host Toronto, which held off a late rally. His dunk gave Toronto a 16-point lead early in the fourth, but Cleveland closed to within five with 2:32 left. Vince Carter, who scored 32, hit a layup and Alvin Williams made a three-pointer to give Toronto a 10-point lead with 1:19 left.

HEAT 103, WIZARDS 95: Brian Grant scored 26 to lead Miami, which won for the 12th time in 14 home games and shot a season-best 56.2 percent. Heat guard Eddie Jones left in the first quarter with a strained left hamstring and didn't return.

BUCKS: Ray Allen had a protective mask specially made to protect his nose, broken in the first quarter Monday against Philadelphia.

GRIZZLIES: Owner Michael Heisley brought his tour of potential relocation sites to Anaheim, Calif. He toured Arrowhead Pond and met with city and arena officials.

76ERS: Coach Larry Brown blasted Heat coach Pat Riley for questioning the "loyalty" of the team toward center Theo Ratliff, who was traded to Atlanta last week. "In Charlotte I'm looking at four guys (whom Riley traded last summer)," Brown said. "That tells you a little bit about Pat Riley."

SUNS: The replay of Shawn Marion's frightening fall Sunday against Utah, his head violently bouncing off the court, has been shown over and over on television. The second-year forward remembers none of it.

"I don't remember falling. I don't remember nothing," Marion said after practice. "The first I heard about it was when I saw it on TV. It was crazy. I was like, "Man, I didn't know it was like that.' I don't like watching it. I just look away."

Marion said doctors have told him he will miss at least two games, but that he could return for Saturday's home game against Denver.

The league said it won't take any action against Jazz guard John Starks, who undercut Marion.

TIMBERWOLVES: Swingman Todd Day, who averaged 4.3 points in 31 games, was waived.

Late Monday

MAGIC 93, NUGGETS 86: Tracy McGrady scored 24 of his 36 in the second half and Darrell Armstrong added 11 points and seven assists to help the Magic overcome an early 16-point deficit.

BLAZERS 95, ROCKETS 89: Rasheed Wallace scored 20 of his 27 in the second half for visiting Portland.

WARRIORS 84, BULLS 78: Antawn Jamison had 24 points and 11 rebounds as visiting Golden State broke an eight-game losing streak.

JAZZ 99, HAWKS 82: Karl Malone had 21 points and eight rebounds for host Utah.

MAVS 103, CLIPPERS 92: Michael Finley scored 23, six in the final 3:51, to lead six players in double figures for visiting Dallas.
