Blackhawks halt Caps' streaks 3-2

WASHINGTON -- Two goals from Steve Sullivan ended the Capitals' 12-game unbeaten streak.

Sullivan increased his goals total to 31, getting the winner on a breakaway with 13:43 to play Tuesday as the Blackhawks beat Washington 3-2.

Eric Daze also scored for the Blackhawks, who have won three in a row as they try to climb into playoff position. They are seven points behind eighth-place Edmonton in the Western Conference.

"This was one of the best games we played the whole year, in every part of the game, defensively, offensively," coach Alpo Suhonen said. "We earned these two points, and I guess it shows that we're going to at least try at the last moment to get to the playoffs."

Dmitri Khristich and Adam Oates scored for the Capitals, who had several streaks end.

The 12-game unbeaten run was the team's longest since 1984. A 10-game streak with at least one power-play goal was stopped, as was a seven-game winning streak in one-goal games.

SABRES 4, SENATORS 1: Jean-Pierre Dumont scored two of three second-period goals for visiting Buffalo, and Dominik Hasek made 29 saves.

Dumont scored at 4:16, five seconds after an Ottawa penalty had expired, to put Buffalo ahead 2-1. He made it a two-goal Sabres lead with his 20th of the season at 12:18.

Eric Rasmussen and Vladimir Tsyplakov also scored for Buffalo and Doug Gilmour assisted on both of Dumont's goals as the Sabres ended Ottawa's three-game winning streak.

BRUINS 7, COYOTES 4: Lee Goren and Jarno Kultanen each scored his first NHL goal, and John Grahame won a battle of backup goalies for host Boston.

Grahame, playing in place of the injured Byron Dafoe and the slumping Peter Skudra, stopped 22 shots to earn his first victory of the season.

Robert Esche allowed four goals on 16 first-period shots for Phoenix.

CANADIENS 3, FLYERS 2: Oleg Petrov had a goal and an assist and Jose Theodore stopped 29 shots as visiting Montreal snapped a six-game losing streak.

Stephane Robidas and Chad Kilger also scored for the Canadiens, who tied a club low with 13 shots. Montreal was outshot 15-3 in the second period.

KINGS 2, PREDATORS 1: Ziggy Palffy scored a short-handed goal with 4:08 left in the third period to lead visiting Los Angeles.

DEVILS 4, ISLANDERS 1: Alexander Mogilny's team-leading 32nd goal snapped a tie late in the second period, and Turner Stevenson scored twice for visiting New Jersey.

HURRICANES 1, THRASHERS 1: Steve Staios' wrist shot with 2:11 remaining forced overtime as host Atlanta set a franchise record with 44 shots.

Pronger surgery a success

ST. LOUIS -- Blues defenseman Chris Pronger, last year's MVP, had successful surgery Tuesday to repair a broken left forearm that will keep him sidelined for the rest of the regular season.

Pronger, the St. Louis captain, was struck by a puck midway through the first period of a 7-2 victory against San Jose on Monday.

During the operation at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, six screws and a metal plate were inserted to repair the fracture.

"It went as I anticipated," said Dr. Rick Wright, who performed the hourlong operation.

FLYERS: John LeClair skated for the first time since being diagnosed with an infection in his surgically repaired back. "It felt very awkward," said LeClair, who is expected to be out another month. "I hadn't skated for a long time, but everything else is positive."

PENGUINS: Mario Lemieux said he probably will skip Saturday's game at Washington to help his fragile back.

SABRES: The team has begun listening to offers for center Michael Peca, a restricted free agent who is holding out, general manager Darcy Regier said. "We've gotten calls from some teams, but not as many as you'd think," he said.

THRASHERS: Goaltender Damian Rhodes will miss three weeks with a groin strain sustained Sunday at Colorado.
