TAMPA -- Time is running out for new homeowners to file for Florida's homestead exemption, which reduces a home's assesed value by $25,000 and can save between $550 and $650 in property taxes in Hillsborough County this year.
The deadline for filing is 5 p.m. Thursday for those don't yet have the exemption but owned their primary residence on Jan. 1.
Filing must be done in person at offices of Hillsborough Property Appraiser Rob Turner in downtown Tampa, Brandon, Plant City, Citrus Park or Ruskin.
Residents should bring a copy of their deed, driver's license, auto registration and Social Security number.
For information, call Turner's office at (813) 272-6100.
