Apply now for homestead exemptionBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published March 1, 2001 INVERNESS -- Property Appraiser Ron Schultz has announced that the deadline to apply for a homestead exemption is March 1. If you are a new permanent Florida resident and moved into your home on or before Jan. 1, you may apply for homestead exemption. This also applies for previously exempted Florida residents that moved into a new home in the year 2000. The Inverness and Crystal River property appraisers' offices will be open today until 7 p.m. for those who have not applied for 2001 homestead exemption. To be eligible for a homestead exemption, you must own the property and be a Florida resident who was living in the home on Jan. 1. Proof of Florida residency may include: Florida driver's license, Citrus County voter registration and Florida auto tags. Your deed or tax notice will serve as proof of ownership. Each owner must provide his or her Social Security number as well as proof of residency. Failure to provide a Social Security number will result in the denial of the exemption. Date of birth, employment and last year's address are also required. This information must be provided for both spouses, if married, even if only one name is on the deed. The turnout at the Inverness Kmart on Feb. 17, indicated that there are many residents who still need to apply for homestead. The office personnel took 12 homestead applications, provided voter registration cards and answered many questions about property ownership, value, deeds and office hours. The Inverness office is on the second floor of the courthouse in Room 201. The Crystal River office is at the south end of Crystal Square Shopping Center on U.S. 19.
