INVERNESS -- Courtenay Gelin, one of the most productive soccer players in Citrus history, signed a letter-of-intent with Webber College on Wednesday.

Gelin was a four-year starter at fullback.

She received a partial athletic scholarship and, because she carries a 3.8 GPA, will get academic aid.

"I'm very excited," Gelin said. "I want to go to Webber and make a difference at that school."

She made one at Citrus.

Gelin owns the school record for games played (104) and games started (101) and was one of the Hurricanes' top defensive players in each of her four seasons.

She was a Times All-Citrus/Hernando pick as a junior. The Times has yet to select this year's team.

During Gelin's final two seasons, Citrus amassed a 43-3-5 record.

"She was real valuable," Hurricanes coach Brady Bogart said.

"She played the left fullback position, which meant she played against the toughest competition for four years. She's got a good work ethic."

Webber, an NAIA school, is located in the Polk County community of Babson Park. The Warriors, coached by Steve Warner, went 3-14-1 last season.

Gelin will be one of 10 newcomers next year for Webber, but Warner said he expects her to challenge for a spot in the starting lineup as a defender.

"She has size, quickness and a determination and passion for the game," Warner said. "She really likes to play.

"When you get to college, it's a whole different ballgame. You have to have a love for the game."

Gelin is the first of nine children in her family to earn an athletic scholarship.

"This is a very exciting thing for the family," said her father, Dr. John Gelin, Citrus' team physician for 29 years.

"She's always been active in sports, but this is the highlight of her athletic career. It's something she's been striving for."

Gelin will arrive at Webber on Aug. 19. She has started training for next season.

"I'm going to do everything I can to get that starting position," Gelin said. "I'm going to miss Citrus. I had a great time playing with these girls."
