As an abstract expressionist, Syd Solomon captured the emotion and expression of nature, forcing it to yield to visible form on canvas in works such as Bay Divide (mixed media, 1984), now on view at the Ringling School of Art and Design. He often took inspiration from the waters near his homes in East Hampton, N.Y., and Sarasota. His bold and dynamic compositions express a stylistic uniqueness that always goes beyond the merely decorative. Solomon was one of several internationally prominent artists attracted to Sarasota's receptive arts community after World War II. Now 83 and suffering from Alzheimer's, he resides in a nursing home in the North. His works, including many never before shown, are on view in "Syd Solomon Revisited" at Selby Gallery at the Ringling School on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, one block east of 2700 N Tamiami Trail, Sarasota; (941) 359-7563. Hours through March 10 are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Closed Sunday. Free.
