In its day, Godspell was something of a poor man's Jesus Christ Superstar, the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice show that found a huge audience for Christian rock. Now the musical gospel according to St. Matthew is back.
This season, there has been a revival off Broadway and a national tour boasting new arrangements of Stephen Schwartz's score and some updating of the book by the late John-Michael Tebelak. There are cast albums out from Varese Sarabande (off Broadway) and DRG (the tour) that include the hit tune, Day by Day, and Beautiful City, which was written for the film and has been added to the stage production.
The Godspell tour has shows at 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday at Mahaffey Theater. Tickets: $27.50-$47.50. (727) 892-5767.
Angelic singing
The Vienna Choir Boys spring tour is in Florida, and the boys have something a bit different on their program this time around. Yes, the angelic choristers sing traditional fare -- motets by Mozart and others, a hymn by Michael Haydn, a setting of the 23rd Psalm by Schubert (an alumnus of the choir) -- but they also devote part of their concert to spiritual songs of diverse ethnic origins. These include Cherokee, Hasidic and Pakistani songs, a Zulu prayer and Go Down Moses.
Conducted by Johannes Mertle, the boys perform at 7 p.m. Friday at Van Wezel Hall. Tickets: $20-$24. (800) 826-9303. The program is repeated at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Tickets: $20.50-$22.50. (727) 791-7400.
