A little 4-foot 3/8-inch mesh thing that I bought at a local drug store. It took me a month of lawn mowing to get enough money for it. When I bought it, I thought "no more buying shrimp for me. No sir! I'm catching all the greenbacks I need now. Well, wouldn't it be nice to have just one net to cover all the bases? Unfortunately, that's unrealistic if you're a live bait fisher. If you're serious about it, you have no less than four nets hanging in your garage. On the flats in the 3- to4-foot depth, it's hard to beat an 8-foot quarter-inch meshnet. The small mesh slows the sinking of the net, but for the flats it works great. One of the best things about the quarter-inch mesh is everything shakes right out. Hardly anything gets gilled. You don't have to spend time pinching heads so you can clean out all the small stuff. When I'm looking for 5- to 6-inch whitebait for reds and snook, I use a 10-foot, 3/8-inch mesh net that weighs 14 pounds. It sinks plenty fast and can catch threadfins in 12-15 feet. I use it as a backup to my 10-foot, 1-inch mesh, which I use for threadies around bridges. For shad, I like a 2-inch 10-footer because it sinks quickly. Shad are probably the hardest baitfish to catch because they swim so fast. You could get away with an inch and a quarter mesh if it is weighs a pound a foot or more. Capt.
