Sabres ecstatic with 3-2 OT win over Avalanche

DENVER -- While the Sabres celebrated, the Avalanche merely shrugged.

As the standings will attest, Buffalo's 3-2 overtime victory Saturday held more meaning to the Sabres as they maneuver for position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

"This was big," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "Any time you get two points this time of the year, it's big. You don't expect to come west and get two points."

Stu Barnes gave Buffalo, which is in fifth place in the East, its 76th point when he beat Colorado goalie Patrick Roy on a breakaway 2:08 into overtime.

The Avs, who lead the league with 92 points, outshot the Sabres 35-16 but were content with gaining one point for an overtime loss. They erased a two-goal deficit and opted to be aggressive in the extra period.

Joe Sakic tied it at 2 on a power play with four seconds left in the second.

BRUINS 3, SHARKS 2: With starting goaltender Byron Dafoe on the verge of returning from a hamstring injury, backup John Grahame had 26 saves to earn his third consecutive win for host Boston.

"With John playing as well as he has, the urgency of (Dafoe) coming back is not quite as intense," Bruins coach Mike Keenan said. "But he did practice very hard today for the first time, so I would say he is very close to returning."

Mike Knuble's goal in the third was the difference for Boston, which has won five straight at home.

SENATORS 3, LEAFS 2 (OT): Alexei Yashin scored twice, including the winner, for visiting Ottawa.

Just 42 seconds into extra time, Yashin stopped in front of defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich and sent a wrist shot over the shoulder of goalie Curtis Joseph.

Mats Sundin made a nice drop pass for Steve Thomas, whose one-timer beat Ottawa goalie Patrick Lalime at 18:47 of the second to tie it at 2.

CAPITALS 4, PENGUINS 3: Richard Zednik scored twice in the third and host Washington made the most of the absence of Mario Lemieux, who is resting his sore back. Zednik whacked in Peter Bondra's rebound on a power play with 11:25 left in the third, erasing a 3-2 Penguins lead. Then, with six minutes left he tucked a wrist shot inside the right post for the winner.

CANADIENS 3, FLYERS 1: Patrick Traverse had a goal, his fourth of the season, and an assist for host Montreal, which extended its winning streak to three. Canadiens goalie Jose Theodore stopped 33 shots in Montreal's second win over Philadelphia in five days.

Ex-Lightning player Daymond Langkow scored his 13th of the season for the Flyers.

PANTHERS 2, THRASHERS 2: Goalie Norm Maracle stopped 41 shots, including three breakaways by Florida's Pavel Bure, for host Atlanta. Steve Guolla scored the tying goal with 13:59 to play for the Thashers.

CAPS-PANTHERS TRADE: Washington acquired center David Emma from Florida for defenseman Remi Royer. The Caps then assigned the 32-year-old Emma to Portland of the AHL. The Panthers also traded defenseman Brent Thompson to the Avalanche for future considerations.
