Greene ties mark of 6.39

Maurice Greene wanted "to do something great" Saturday at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Atlanta. That was exactly what he did.

The Olympic 100-meter gold medalist and world-record holder tied his world mark in the 60, running 6.39 seconds in a semifinal. About 11/2 hours later, Greene won the final in 6.51.

Coby Miller won the men's 200 at 20.31 but was hospitalized with injuries to his left foot after third-place Shawn Crawford accidentally clipped him. Pole vaulter Lawrence Johnson set an American record of 19 feet, 61/2 inches.

BASKETBALL: Visiting Tampa Bay defeated San Diego 110-104 late Friday in ABA 2000. Ace Custis led the ThunderDawgs with 35 points. The teams played again in San Diego late Saturday. COLLEGES: In baseball, Daniel Hodges struck out seven in five relief innings to lead Florida State past Michigan State 10-5. Ben Harrison hit a three-run homer in the fourth to lead host Florida past Central Michigan 8-7. ... In softball, FSU beat Northwestern 2-1 and Ball State 1-0 at the Seminole Challenge tournament. ... In track, FSU's Joe Allen won the long jump at 24-10 in the Last Ditch Meet at LSU, beating Florida's Maurice Lewis. The UF men's distance medley relay team ran 9:36.87 at Notre Dame to qualify for the NCAA meet. ... The South Florida women's tennis match at South Alabama was rained out. ... In men's tennis, USF beat Harvard 6-1. Host FSU defeated Virginia 4-3 as freshman Jerrod Owen won the final match. ... Freshman Alex Haynes scored on runs of 45 and 18 yards in Central Florida's second full spring football scrimmage at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

TENNIS: Top seeds Elena Dementieva and Amanda Coetzer advanced to today's final of the Mexican Open at Acapulco. Men's No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten beat Guillermo Canas in a semifinal. ... Greg Rusedski made today's Sybase Open final in San Jose, Calif., beating qualifier Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-2. ... Juan Carlos Ferrero won the Dubai Open in the United Arab Emirates when Marat Safin quit in the second set because of back pain. Ferrero led 6-2, 3-1. ... No. 8 seed Meghann Shaughnessy beat Monica Seles in a semifinal of the State Farm Classic at Scottsdale, Ariz.

SOCCER: Brazil got a 56th-minute goal from substitute Euller to beat the United States 2-1 in an exhibition before 45,387 at the Rose Bowl. The United States, coming off Wednesday's win over Mexico in World Cup qualifying, fielded a young, mostly MLS-based team. American Clint Mathis scored in the 40th minute. ... Guest player Alex Badeio scored in the first half and Chad McCarty and Joe Addo scored in the second as the Mutiny beat the U.S. under-17 team 3-0 at Brandon. ... Nineteen, including four policemen, were injured in fights after a match at Siirt Spor, Turkey.

CYCLING: Fabian Jeker won the five-day Tour of Valencia by 23 seconds. Viatcheslav Ekimov won the time trial stage.

SAILING: John Calvert-Jones led the Farr 40 class after two days at the Southern Ocean Racing Conference in Miami Beach. ... Grant Dalton arrived in Marseille, France, to complete the fastest round-the-world voyage (62 days) and win the inaugural Millennium Race. The catamaran Club Med broke the record by nine days.

DOGS: Stan's Boy Flyer tied the season's best time of 30.42 to win the Matinee Idol Stakes at Derby Lane. ... Sixty-eight teams start the Iditarod sled dog race today in Anchorage, Alaska.

FIGURE SKATING: Kristina Oblasova of Russia beat American Ann Patrice McDonough to win the women's title at the World Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Third-place Susanna Poykio won Finland's first junior medal.

SKIING: Hermann Maier's fifth place in downhill in Kvitfjell, Norway, clinched his third World Cup overall title. He joined Marc Girardelli (five titles), Ingemar Stenmark and Phil Mahre as three-time champions. Stephan Eberharter won the event. ... Risto Jussilainen won his first jumping title at Oberstdorf, Germany.

SPEED SKATING: Chris Witty and Mike Ireland set 1,000-meter world records at Calgary. Witty (1:14.58) was .03 faster than Monique Garbrecht-Enfeldt's mark. Ireland (1:08.34) broke Jeremy Wotherspoon's mark by .01.

OLYMPICS: The IOC, criticized for not including unaffiliated Internet companies among 19,590 credentials issued for the Sydney Summer Games last year, approved more than a dozen Internet organizations worldwide to cover next year's Salt Lake City Games.

HORSES: Tiznow, with Chris McCarron aboard, won the $1-million Santa Anita Handicap by 5 lengths over Wooden Phone. Also on the Santa Anita card, the $200,000 San Rafael Stakes, a 1-mile race that serves as a stepping stone for the April 7 Santa Anita Derby, was won by Crafty C.T., who finished 4 lengths in front of Palmeiro. ... Burning Roma won the $50,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs by a length over American Prince.

BOXING: Laila Ali and Jacqui Frazier-Lyde, daughters of former heavyweight champions on the same card for the first time, scored knockouts to remain undefeated late Friday at Verona, N.Y. -- Compiled from Times wires.
