    Candidate reply

    By ROBIN BORLAND

    © St. Petersburg Times, published March 5, 2001

    Editor's note: The Times gives candidates not recommended by its editorial board the opportunity to write a response for publication. The following response was received from Robin Borland after the newspaper's recommendation of her opponent in the March 13 Safety Harbor City Commission election.

    * * *

    I'd like to thank you for the kind words in your editorial and I would like to clarify where I stand on the issues.

    I support fixing the pier and building a veteran's memorial in Marina Park. I support making the park a nice place to spend the day, but at a reasonable price tag. I do not support the fountain or observation deck because I feel it is a waste of the taxpayers' money.

    Although ground for the fountain has already been broken, bids are out on the observation deck and I would vote no on this part of the project. We can provide needed shade and make the necessary improvements in the park for less than $800,000.

    As for the city putting off projects to pay for Marina Park, I ask one question: Why did it take over five years to fix our brick streets and only two years to implement this project?

    I do not support using taxpayers' money to fix private property. The problems plaguing Bishop Creek came about because the city failed to complete a drainage project five years ago. The city is responsible for the erosion problems and I believe it is responsible for correcting these problems.

    In the past two years I have spoken with more than 2,000 citizens, sat in on almost all of the City Commission meetings, and attended visioning workshops, drainage workshops, merchant association meetings, Chamber of Commerce meetings, tourist development meetings, neighborhood association meetings and neighborhood watch meetings.

    I have made myself accessible to the people of Safety Harbor and I have listened to their ideas and concerns.

    That is real leadership. That is what I offer the people of Safety Harbor in this election. I ask you to vote for me, Robin Borland, on March 13.
