BROOKSVILLE -- A Brooksville fire engine en route to a false alarm at Hernando High School collided with a car Sunday morning at North and Howell avenues.

No one was injured in the crash, Brooksville Fire Chief James Daugherty said.

Firefighter Kenneth Cubernot was cited with a right of way violation after he hit a 1985 Lincoln headed south on Howell Avenue.

Florida Highway Patrol records indicate Cubernot stopped at the Howell Avenue stop sign, then proceeded east on North Avenue. The truck's lights and sirens were not on at the time, and it collided with the right side of the car. Total damage to the car and truck was estimated at $2,500.

Daugherty said Tyanna Kowalski, the driver of the car, and her 9- and 11-year-old daughters, who were passengers, were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Daugherty said everyone in the car was wearing a seat belt, as were Cubernot and firefighter Mike Dow, a passenger in the truck.

Daugherty called the crash an accident and said he will not recommend that Cubernot, a 17-year department veteran, be suspended. He added that the Brooksville safety committee will review the accident and discuss it at its next meeting March 15.

Report: Boy, 17, injured in fight with Pasco youths

MASARYKTOWN -- A 17-year-old Masaryktown boy suffered a skull fracture Friday after he was hit with a stick during a fight outside the town community center.

Johnny L. Hare was taken by helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he was treated and released.

According to a Hernando County sheriff's report, Hare was playing ball with friends outside the Masaryktown Community Center on Lincoln Road when three teens from Pasco County showed up in a red Chevy pickup truck about 6 p.m. They got out of the truck and argued with Hare and his friends, the report said. One hit Hare over the head with a stick before all three jumped back in the truck and drove off, the report said.

Hare told deputies that he had had trouble with the group over a stolen skateboard.
