Clifford Geffon, 49, prominent Pinellas rug retailer
By CRAIG BASSE © St. Petersburg Times, published March 6, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG -- Clifford Geffon, a prominent figure in Pinellas County rug retailing for decades, has died at 49. Mr. Geffon, who worked in his family's Royal Rug & Tile chain since boyhood and struck out on his own two years ago, died Sunday (March 4, 2001) at his Treasure Island home. He had not been ill and died in his sleep, said a brother, Randy. The Medical Examiner's Office had not determined the cause of death. Born in New York City, Clifford Geffon came here at age 2. As he and his three brothers grew old enough, they joined their father, Stanley, in the business that began as a rug cleaning shop in 1935. The carpet business was started in 1954 at 320 28th St. S, Clifford Geffon recalled in 1998 on the occasion of his father's death. At one time, the company had stores in St. Petersburg, Largo, Clearwater, New Port Richey and Hudson, the son said. It now operates one store in St. Petersburg and two in Largo. Clifford Geffon, who opened Regal Rug & Tile on Central Avenue in 1999, was a member of Congregation B'Nai Israel. A member of Northside Lodge 283 F&AM, he was a Master Mason, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Egypt Shrine Temple, Tampa, and Scottish Rite Bodies. Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Beverly; a son, Benjamin, and a daughter, Lindsay Geffon, his mother, Shirley Geffon, and three brothers, Fredric J., Randy M. and Barry M., all of Treasure Island; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Beth David Chapel, 6366 Central Ave. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 4801 86th Ave. N, Pinellas Park, FL 33782, or the American Heart Association, 9900 Dr. M.L.
