USF adds Southern Utah to schedule

TAMPA -- South Florida has found a replacement for Akron, which dropped the Bulls from its 2001 schedule because of a conflict.

USF plays Southern Utah at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at Raymond James Stadium in the home opener. It will be the Bulls' third game of the season, after games at Northern Illinois and Pittsburgh.

Southern Utah is a I-AA independent. The Thunderbirds, 7-4 last season, led Division I-AA in rushing last year and in three of the past five seasons.

MIAMI: Former Houston co-defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, brother of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, was named defensive backs coach.

SYRACUSE: A Syracuse judge dismissed resisting arrest and obstructing police charges against linebacker Clifton Smith and kicker Jason Mandler. The two spent a night in jail after a Feb. 25 incident in which Mandler became agitated when asked to show his license and registration after honking his horn at an unmarked squad car.

UTAH: Sean Patrick O'Keefe, a former player charged with breaking a baseball bat on a teenager's head during a party, tearfully pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in Salt Lake City. He originally was charged with attempted murder after a fight Sept. 18.

WISCONSIN: Former running back Michael Bennett pleaded innocent to charges that he kicked in the door of a woman's apartment Feb. 12 in Madison, Wis.
