ST. PETERSBURG -- Thirteen students from Lakewood Elementary School were treated for minor injuries Monday after a driver ran a stop sign and crashed into their school bus.

Eight children were taken to Bayfront Medical Center, and five were taken to All Children's Hospital after the 4 p.m. accident at Seventh Avenue N and Highland Street. They range in age from 6 to 12 years old.

None of the injuries was serious, said St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue Lt. Al Krauza. The worst wounds included a head cut and a possible broken rib, he said.

"My side was aching," said 10-year-old Sarah Lariviere, who was not treated at a hospital. Her mother, Louise Lariviere, came to the scene to pick up her daughter.

She was upset that she learned of the accident through a neighbor, not the school.

"They need to work a little faster," Mrs. Lariviere said.

Lakewood principal Ray Tampa said staff members worked as quickly as possible.

The school bus driver, 46-year-old Mark Moorefield, was northbound on Highland Street N, carrying 39 students, police said. He was not hurt.

Chom S. Goedker, 39, of St. Petersburg was eastbound in the right lane of Seventh Avenue N in a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, said Sgt. Keith Peaton.

She failed to stop at a sign and crashed into the bus in the intersection, police said. She was cited but was not injured, police said.
