Jeter pain-free after throwing session at short

TAMPA -- Shortstop Derek Jeter cleared another hurdle toward possibly making his spring debut this weekend.

Jeter, who has an inflamed joint in his throwing shoulder, made 40 throws from short to first base Tuesday without discomfort.

"I don't feel anything out of the ordinary," said Jeter, who threw from his playing position for the first time in a week. "Your arm is tired because you haven't swung the bat and you haven't thrown, but that spot that's been injured, no."

Hammered but healthy

DUNEDIN -- Joey Hamilton did not have the healthiest of numbers Tuesday. The right-hander gave up five runs on seven hits against the Rays.

But numbers are not the biggest thing Blue Jays manager Buck Martinez said he is looking at when evaluating Hamilton. "We're looking at how healthy he is and whether he is getting good extension on his pitches," Martinez said. "We want to make sure he is free and easy again."

Last season shoulder problems limited Hamilton to six starts. This spring he has given up seven runs in four innings.

SIROTKA SITUATION: Left-hander Mike Sirotka (rotator cuff) is scheduled to be re-examined Thursday, likely by team doctor Steve Mirabello, Martinez said. He said Major League Baseball had not decided on compensation for Sirotka, who was hurt when he came from the White Sox in a trade for left-hander David Wells. A decision is expected in the next few days.

Korean pitchers sign

CLEARWATER -- The Phillies signed 21-year-old Korean pitchers Seung Lee and Il Kim to one-year contracts, the first Korean citizens the team has signed.

Lee signed for $1.2-million, and Kim, who was on the Korean national team last year, signed for $800,000.

"Both would have had a chance to be first-round selections if they were in the amateur draft," Mike Arbuckle, director of scouting and player development, said in a release. -- TIMES WIRES
