Mutiny seeks to discover two players

The Mutiny expects to fill its two discovery player spots by the start of the Major League Soccer season April7. The team hopes to sign a forward and possibly a midfielder.

A discovery player is one not under contract with MLS that a team finds on its own and petitions the league to sign. No team may sign more than two discovery players in a season and may not have more than four on its roster.

Mutiny forward Mamadou Diallo was a discovery player.

"We've looked at about 200 players so far," coach Alfonso Mondelo said. "We haven't found the ideal fit yet, but we'll keep looking until we do."

NEW UNIFORMS: The Mutiny modeled its new uniforms Tuesday. The main difference is the Kappa logo on the right shoulder and the polyester lycra material commonly used by competitive bicyclists.

The Mutiny had worn Nike uniforms. Nike did not renew its MLS contract this season. Kappa is worn by the Colorado Rapids and the Italian national team.

TICKET SALES: Single-game tickets for the Mutiny go on sale Saturday, ranging from $20 for center circle to $10 for general admission. General manager Bill Manning said the club has sold 50,000 tickets, which includes season and individual game group tickets.

"We're way up from where we were last year," Manning said. "Our season ticket sales are down slightly, but overall group sales are way up."

As part of a promotion, anyone who purchases a season ticket can register to win a "Team Experience," which includes practicing with the team and sitting on the bench at a spring training game in Fort Lauderdale. Register at www.tampabaymutiny.com. The winner will be announced Tuesday.

YOUTH LEAGUES: As part of its $600,000 annual marketing budget, the Mutiny pledged $100,000 to 47 area youth league clubs.

Elsewhere

WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: Los Angeles of MLS was drawn into a group with European champ Real Madrid for the competition, July28-Aug. 12 in Spain. Hearts of Oak (Ghana) and Jubilo Iwata (Japan) also are in Group C. The competition is for champions from each continent and some runners-up.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Manchester United called up 19-year-old Paul Rachubka of California as its No. 2 goalkeeper for today's game in Athens against Panathinaikos. Rachubka, who has British parents, played for England at a youth tournament and thus is ineligible for any U.S. national team.

MACEDONIA: The country's seven first-division games scheduled today were postponed because of ethnic tensions. Clashes between government troops and ethnic Albanian rebels in a village near the border with Kosovo prompted the decision.
