Fortuitous bounce lifts Devils into first

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Patrik Elias scored a somewhat flukey goal 28 seconds into overtime, and the Devils won their fifth straight by rallying to defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 Tuesday night.

Defenseman Scott Stevens set up power-play goals by Jason Arnott and Sergei Brylin in a 2:56 span bridging the end of the second period and the start of the third to force overtime.

The Devils moved into first place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of Philadelphia, and within four points of Ottawa for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Shawn McEachern staked the Senators to a 2-0 lead, but Ottawa could not hold on in losing to New Jersey for the first time in four games this season (2-1-1).

Elias' winner came seconds after he skated into the Senators' zone and made a drop pass to Arnott. The center's shot at Patrick Lalime missed the net on the left side and bounced off the end boards out the right side. Elias collected the puck and fired into an open net for his 27th goal.

Trailing 2-0 after the McEachern goals, the Devils tied it against an Ottawa penalty-killing unit that had given up four goals on 47 attempts in 12 games.

Arnott got the Devils back in it, scoring with one second left on a 36-second power play. Lalime made the save on a quick turnaround shot by Stevens, but Arnott got the rebound and tucked the puck into the corner of the net at 18:59 of the second period.

A foolish holding penalty in the offensive zone by Marian Hossa put the Devils back on the power play 76 seconds into the third period. Stevens walked in from the left point and slid a nice cross-ice pass that Brylin re-directed into an open net at 1:55 for his 19th goal.

SABRES 3, BRUINS 1: Dominik Hasek stopped 20 shots as well-rested Buffalo beat weary Boston.

Curtis Brown and Jason Woolley scored, and Vladimir Tsyplakov added an empty-netter with three seconds left for the Sabres, who arrived in Boston on Sunday night before a storm dumped up to two feet of snow on parts of Massachusetts.

The Bruins, who played at Philadelphia on Monday night, took an early train and didn't get home until the afternoon.

AVALANCHE 4, THRASHERS 2: Ville Nieminen scored two goals to lead visiting Colorado. Colorado backup goalie David Aebischer stopped 22 shots to improve to 9-5-3. The Avalanche have lost once in eight games.

CAPITALS 5, ISLANDERS 1: Adam Oates had a goal and three assists as Washington extended its unbeaten streak over New York to 19 games.

Olaf Kolzig made 18 saves for the Capitals, 17-0-2 against the Islanders since Tommy Salo shut out Washington on March 2, 1997.

Washington has won nine straight on Long Island since Salo earned another shutout Dec. 7, 1996, the night Clark Gillies' No. 9 jersey was retired.

WILD 3, BLUES 3: Cam Stewart scored with 2:01 left in regulation for host Minnesota.

Stewart fired a loose puck past goalie Brent Johnson to send the Blues into their fourth overtime is six games. St. Louis, coming off 3-2 overtime losses at Calgary and Vancouver, is winless in nine road games.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, FLAMES 1: Nik Antropov and Mats Sundin scored 97 seconds apart midway through the third period as visiting Toronto rallied.

COYOTES 5, PREDATORS 1: Shane Doan scored twice and Jeremy Roenick had a goal and two assists as host Phoenix snapped a five-game winless streak.

NHL may skip Olympics

The NHL may pull its players from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City if issues regarding drug testing remain unresolved. The league and its union want common drug testing regulations to apply to each country using NHL players in next year's tournament, said Bill Daly, the league's chief legal officer. The United States Olympic Committee has called for participating U.S. athletes to be tested for performance enhancing drugs up to a year before the Olympics.

COYOTES: Phoenix recalled defenseman Paul Mara from Detroit of the IHL one day after he was acquired in the trade that sent goalie Nikolai Khabibulin to the Lightning. The 21-year-old Mara, in his second season, appeared in 46 games with Tampa Bay this season, scoring six goals and assisting on 10. The Coyotes also recalled defenseman David Cullen from Springfield of the AHL. ... Right wing Claude Lemieux, 35, will miss the rest of the regular season with a torn ankle ligament suffered Sunday at Colorado.

FLYERS: Veteran left wing Paul Ranheim signed a two-year contract. Terms were not available.

KINGS: Center Josef Stumpel will miss an indefinite period because of a fractured rib. ... Adam Deadmarsh, acquired in the trade that sent defenseman Rob Blake to Colorado, will miss two games with a bruised right hand from a Feb. 24 game with Columbus. Tests showed no bone damage.

OILERS: Edmonton signed forward Sean McAslan, 21, a free agent playing junior hockey, to a three-year, $1.2-million contract.

THRASHERS: Zdenek Blatny, 19, a left wing from the Czech Republic who was a third-round pick in the 1999 entry draft, signed.
