5 brand-name drugs may lose protections

Several brand-name drugs would lose the market protections they now enjoy under a bill a Senate panel approved Tuesday.

Under current Florida law, pharmacists give customers the cheapest version of a drug unless the patient or doctor asks for a brand name. But 11 drugs are exempt from that, and the bill the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee approved Tuesday would remove five from that list, including the well-known blood thinner Coumadin.
