Register today for WalkAmerica on April 28INVERNESS -- More than 300 community-spirited area residents will take the first step toward saving babies in 2001 when they come to WalkAmerica on April 28 at Rails to Trails in Inverness. The March of Dimes encourages walkers to take the WalkAmerica 2001 Challenge to raise $105 or more and help save babies. For information about WalkAmerica contact Terri Murnane, community director, at 800-333-DIME. Sponsor forms are also available at Kmart. Everyone who participates in WalkAmerica becomes a hero for babies. The walk that has been saving babies for more than 30 years. The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies. Information is available on the March of Dimes Web site at www.modimes.org. Alzheimer's group plans educational seminarLECANTO -- The Alzheimer's Family Organization will sponsor an educational seminar for caregivers and professionals 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 30 at the Nature Coast Lodge, 279 N Lecanto Highway. Lunch is included. You must register for this event. The seminar will help educate caregivers and professionals on Alzheimer's disease. Topics include: Alzheimer's 101 With Research Updates, Improving Caregiving Techniques, Depression in the Elderly, Alzheimer's Activities and Legal Considerations for Seniors. Flotilla 15-01 to offer boating, seamanship classCRYSTAL RIVER -- A Boating Safety And Seamanship class will be offered by USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 15-01, Crystal River, from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning April 3 and continuing every Tuesday and Thursday and ending on April 26 at the St. Martin Preserve Headquarters Building, (Old Crystal River Yacht Club) at the end of State Park Street. Registration is required to get into this class. The classes are directed at making your power boating safer and more pleasurable. Some of the subjects covered are legal requirements, boat handling, navigation rules, trailering, aids to navigation (highway signs), piloting and some radio procedures. The classes are open to adults and children. The course is free, but there is a charge for the textbook and course materials. Certificates and cards will be awarded to those who successfully complete the course. A Florida Boaters identification card may be obtained by completing this course. Boating, seamanship class offered in LecantoLECANTO -- The Homosassa Flotilla 15-4 in cooperation with Central Florida Community College will present an eight-session evening program, "Boating Skills and Seamanship." Although this course is designed for the entry-level boater, all boaters are reminded of the need to update their knowledge and skills. Topics will include boat handling, rules of the road, GPS navigation, knots and legal requirements. The classes will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday and Thursday evening at the CFCC Lecanto campus, 3800 S Lecanto Highway, County Road 491, beginning on April 2 and the final class scheduled for April 26. Cost will be a $5 registration fee plus a minimal charge for study materials, which students will keep. Flotilla 15-4 reminds owners and operators of personal water craft that they, too, are governed by the same rules, and have the same need for boating knowledge as the operators of power boats. Boaters are reminded that several insurance companies offer discounts on boating insurance to owners who successfully complete this course. This program also satisfies the Florida requirement that young boaters need to obtain a Florida operators permit. New, experienced, young and older boaters alike are invited to attend.
