LECANTO -- Naveen Reddy, 18, a senior at Lecanto High School, was recently selected as Citrus County schools' Sunshine State Scholar, a statewide program based on achievements in math and science.
He was formally recognized at the Jan. 9 School Board meeting.
Reddy became eligible to participate in a regional competition in Gainesville, which he said included about 20 students from about 15 counties. Students were tested on mathematics, statistics, biology, chemistry, environmental science and physics. The six regional winners will compete in Tallahassee this month.
While not advancing to the state competition after competing in the regional contest, Reddy nonetheless received a color graphing calculator through the support of Casio and the Florida Department of Education.
Reddy plans a career in medicine and is interested in sports medicine and surgery. He is awaiting responses from several universities before deciding which to attend. Reddy has an unweighted 4.0 grade point average, and he enjoys cross country track and tennis. He is the son of Padma and Venu Reddy of Hernando.
LECANTO -- Karina Wroble, 17, of Lecanto High was selected as one of 24 recipients of the Florida's First Lady Arts Recognition Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Nearly 200 applied.
The program is in collaboration with Arts for a Complete Education/Florida Alliance for Arts Education.
Karina is invited to Tallahassee for a reception at the Governor's Mansion to be recognized with her teacher, Connie Phillips, by Gov. and Mrs. Jeb Bush on March 19.
The arts recognition program encourages visual and performing arts. Karina is a visual artist and says she does drawings using both graphite pencil and colored pencil. She is also interested in photography.
"I really have bold values," she said, explaining that she likes to use color or dramatic shading in her work. Karina hopes to go to a university or a school of art after high school. She is the daughter of Susan Persson of Beverly Hills.
