GAINESVILLE -- Veteran NFL kicker Al Del Greco will aim golf balls at flags instead of footballs through goal posts starting today after qualifying to play in the Tour's season-opening Florida Classic.

Del Greco, waived by the Tennessee Titans last week in an effort to reduce the team's payroll, will compete for the $76,500 winner's share of the event's $425,000 purse. Del Greco made $700,000 with the Titans last season.

Though Del Greco has said he would like to become a teaching pro after his football career ends, he is not ready to do it yet, his agent said.

"When it doesn't conflict with the NFL season, he's certainly interested in participating," Frank Murtha said. "I've jokingly said when he's old enough to qualify for the senior tour, he'll be part of my retirement plan."

A five-time winner of the Senior PGA Tour's Cadillac NFL Golf Classic, Del Greco secured one of the Florida Classic's 14 remaining spots with a 2-under-par 70 Monday, setting up his first round against professionals.

A regular on the celebrity golf circuit, Del Greco, 39, has been named by Golf Magazine as the best golfer among athletes in other professional sports.
