ST. PETERSBURG -- A 26-year-old resident of the Promenade apartments was raped at knifepoint Wednesday in the leasing office restroom.
Police have no suspects in the assault, which happened at 8:25 a.m. near the pool at 540 Carillon Parkway N. The woman's name is not being published because of the nature of the incident.
Wednesday morning she worked out in the gym at the apartment complex and saw a man in the soda machine area, Detective Donald Crotty said.
When the woman went to the restroom, she was pushed from behind by the suspect, who raped her on the floor, then fled the area.
"We don't know if he jumped in a car, ran or what," said George Kajtsa, police spokesman.
After the rape, apartment managers posted a notice, informing tenants of the incident and reminding them to keep windows and doors locked.
"As you can appreciate, no one can ensure your personal safety," the notice said.
The property, which has 340 units ranging in price from $700 to $1,215, is not gated and does not provide security.
"We're just cooperating with the police," manager Suzanne Close said Thursday.
The suspect is described as a clean-shaven white man, 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 9 to 6 feet and 220 pounds. He has brown hair and wore a gray sweat shirt and dark sunglasses.
"The victim described him as having a terrible odor," police spokesman Kajtsa said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crotty at (727) 893-7563.
