NEW PORT RICHEY -- Developers announced they are withdrawing a rezoning application for Jordan Lakes, a controversial low-income apartment complex proposed for Little Road and Ross Lane.
Tom Fraser, whose family owns the 23 acres north of the West Pasco Government Center, attributed the death of the 216-unit complex to a coalition of anti-apartment neighbors in and around the upscale Crescent Forest subdivision.
After the Pasco Development Review Committee tentatively approved Jordan Lakes' rezoning in January, neighborhood attorney Clyde Hobby appealed. The appeal delayed rezoning consideration beyond the deadline for financing the apartments.
Citing the lack of proper zoning, county commissioners on Feb. 20 declined to support tax credits for the $16.7-million project.
"Technically they beat us to the ball. We just couldn't get it done in time," Fraser said.
The Frasers have canceled their contract with Vestcor, the Jacksonville apartment developer. If Vestcor officials want to give the project another shot next year he'll be glad to talk to them, Fraser said.
