Former Hernando High standout Brent Stentz pitched his second scoreless inning of spring training for the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Stentz, a closer prospect, allowed two hits and struck out a batter in the seventh inning of an 8-6 loss to Texas in Fort Myers.

Stentz is 0-0 with a save and a 0.00 earned-run average in two spring appearances. He has allowed three hits and struck out three batters.

He began last season in Triple A but was demoted to Double A after struggling in the early months of the season.

BEST BET

  • WHAT: High school softball.

  • WHO: Central vs. Hernando.

  • WHEN: 7 p.m. today.

  • WHY: Because Hernando (3-1) is used to being the best team in the county, and Central (5-2) thinks it is and wants to prove it. Hernando, which finally played its season-opener on Tuesday and thrashed Springstead 17-0, has home-field advantage and the blessing of pitching depth. Coach Ernie Chatman has three quality starters -- Kimi Olmstead, Beth Chatman, Chrissy Hartley -- from which to choose. Bears coach Benny Martinez does not have quite the depth and may elect to start Jamie Pape after twin sister Jen started against Citrus on Thursday. ... Or, if that doesn't do it for you, Central hosts the Bears Relays beginning at 4 p.m. There will be 15 boys teams and 15 girls teams competing. One relay worth watching will include Central's girls 4x100 squad of Daisha Holland, Leiko Munford, Tiffany Mobley and Aliya Smiley

New rankings

The high school track Internet site flrunners.com released new rankings for distance events Wednesday and the county has a greater presence in this week's listings.

Central senior Theresa Bergeron is ranked sixth among Class 2A girls in the 3,200 meters and ranks ninth in the 1,600, just ahead of Lecanto's Amanda Howard.

Hernando senior Joel Tierson is still ranked ninth in the boys 1,600 meters, and Hernando's 4x800 relay is ranked 10th.
