Chocachatti lottery a quiet affairBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published March 10, 2000 BROOKSVILLE -- Chocachatti Elementary, the county's only magnet school, held its second enrollment lottery Wednesday night, selecting students for kindergarten and first and second grade. The school had 203 families apply, with some seeking spots for more than one child. Chocachatti expects to enroll 700 children next year. Last year's lottery, which featured 1,700 applications for 690 seats, was a raucous public affair. It lasted four hours and was interrupted by hecklers. This lottery was much quieter and closed to the public. Chocachatti principal Michael Tellone conducted the lottery, pulling cards from a homemade basket. The process took just an hour. Democrat files for District 1 seatPaul H. Weekley, commander of Amvets Post 28, will run against Pat Novy. Water restrictions may be tighterDry conditions could lead to further restrictions across the region. WeatherToday: Areas of morning fog. Becoming partly sunny.
