One of at least two men trying to rob a McDonald's in Tampa shortly after 11 p.m. Friday was shot and killed by a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy.

The suspects fired at the deputy, who was injured and remains hospitalized in stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital this morning. The deputy returned fire at the suspects, hitting one of them and killing him.

An investigation into the incident continues as authorities are seeking the identity of the dead man and the whereabouts of the other suspects.

About 1 a.m., the SWAT team began bringing employees out of the building at N Dale Mabry Highway and Spruce Street.

The restaurant was expected to open about 10 a.m. this morning.
