FLORAL CITY -- Authorities on Monday evening sought a man who confronted an elderly woman outside the Floral City post office earlier in the day and stole her purse. The woman, 82, told a Citrus County sheriff's deputy that the man approached her about 2:20 p.m. She had just parked her car outside the post office, which is on U.S. 41. The man struggled with the woman, causing her to fall and hit her head, sheriff's spokeswoman Ronda Hemminger Evan said. The man eventually grabbed the purse and ran toward Old Floral City Road, Evan said. The woman described her assailant as a white man in his 30s who was wearing denim shorts, gray T-shirt and a dark ball cap.
LECANTO -- A statewide campaign to increase funding for schools will make a stop in Citrus County on Wednesday. The Florida Home Builders Association and the Florida School Boards Association are sponsoring the "2 by 4" campaign, which features 14,000 blocks of wood on which students, parents and School Board members have written messages. The boards are bound for Tallahassee. On the way, the truck is stopping at various spots. One spot is the Citrus County Builders Association, where an event is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday. The building is at 1196 S Lecanto Highway (County Road 491).
INVERNESS -- The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking participants for a charity motorcycle ride on April 8 that will benefit the Special Olympics, which will be held later that month in Kissimmee. Members of the public can join law enforcement officials from across the state in the 65-mile ride through Citrus County. Registration forms can be picked up at Gorilla Motors of Inverness, Honda of Crystal River and Barney's Motorcycle & Marine of Brooksville. Riders can also register at 8:30 a.m. the day of the event, which begins two hours later in downtown Inverness. The $15 registration fee includes a T-shirt.
CRYSTAL RIVER -- Sunshine Network's High School Xtra was in Citrus County on Monday to tape a segment about the Crystal River baseball team, which was 11-1 heading into Monday night's game against Wesley Chapel. The feature will air March 22.
