    Dunedin student honored for scientific research

    Christina Dicus of Palm Harbor University High School received a $1,000 scholarship from Intel Corp. for her research on a complication afflicting cancer patients taking a specific medication. She was one of 300 semifinalists nationwide and 12 semifinalists from Florida selected in the the Intel Science Talent Search.

    Dicus was selected to speak about her research at the 38th Annual Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium. She attended the 42nd annual University of Florida Student Science Training Program and was selected to work on an HIV research project at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Dicus also is an award-winning skier and a member of the Southern Alpine Racing Association. Her parents are Henry and Margarita M. Dicus of Dunedin.

    Fifth-grader wins black history essay contest

    Rachel Manzo, of Orange Grove Elementary, won first prize in a black history essay contest sponsored by the Pinellas County Science Center. Rachel wrote about Mae Jemison, the first African-American female astronaut. Rachel received a free trip to the center's laser show for her entire class, a gift bag of center goodies and an opportunity to take a free course at the center this summer.

    VFW awards essay contest winners

    The VFW Post 10093 Auxiliary has named three essay contest winners from Safety Harbor Middle School. First place went to Tracy L. Bancroft, second place went to Lindsey R. Griffith and third place went to Amanda N. Parady. All received cash prizes for their essays on patriotism.

    Students honored at Principal's Brunch

    East Lake High School principal Rick Misenti honored 14 students at the Principal's Brunch. Students were chosen by faculty based on attitude, service commitment, behavior and citizenship. Honorees were Michael Andrews, Michael Bacher, Adam Feldman, Marlena Gannon, Natalie Gross, Kyle Johnson, Erin Meagher, Ryan Merryman, Amanda Mullins, Lindsey Palmer, Michelle Roach, Jamie Selzer, Rachel Thibault and Hunter West.
