    High school journalism program

    The Poynter Institute's High School Journalism Program is accepting applications from students interested in a journalism career. Students in the program will take part in a workshop from July 22 through August 1 and attend monthly after-school seminars during the fall. The program is free and is open to any area high school students who will enter 10th through 12th grades this fall. For applications, call Jeannie Nissenbaum at (727) 821-9400, ext. 240. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 9.

    PTA meeting to discuss 'Talking Schools'

    The Pinellas County Council of PTAs will have a general meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Pinellas County Schools administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW, Largo. The meeting will focus on the "Talking Schools" program, which is a countywide dialogue designed to foster communication between high school students and adults. Future dialogues will be open to all high school students, parents, school board employees and community members.

    Bookarama competition

    The 10th annual Bookarama will be held at 10:30 a.m. on March 23 in the conference hall at the Pinellas County Schools administration building. In the Bookarama competition, middle school students compete by talking about their favorite books and convincing the judges that their books are the most interesting. This year's theme is "Read for the Fun of It!" For more information, call Priscilla Roberts at (727) 547-4526.

    Family gardening class

    School of the Suncoast will host a gardening class for the whole family from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The cost is $10 for the family and will include a variety of seeds and gardening information. For more information, call (727) 532-0696.

    Local high school hosts Special Olympics

    Pinellas County Schools and the city of St. Petersburg are sponsoring the 2001 Area 6 Special Olympics Summer. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at Lakewood High School. More than 650 athletes from five counties will compete in track and field, soccer, bocce, tennis, volleyball and motor activities. An Olympic Village will feature games, activities, entertainment and a souvenir booth. The area competitions will determine which athletes advance to the state competition in Kissimmee in April.
