Dudley: No big deal, but deadline move could happen todayBy DAMIAN CRISTODERO © St. Petersburg Times, published March 13, 2001 TAMPA -- Don't expect the Lightning to make any big moves before today's 3 p.m. trade deadline. But don't be surprised if general manager Rick Dudley pulls the trigger on some lesser transactions, most likely to acquire draft choices. "I wouldn't rule anything out," he said Monday. "There's a lot of fishing going on out there. I think veteran defensemen will be at a premium." The Lightning has that in Grant Ledyard. The 39-year-old has played well and added stability to a developing back line. But he is, at best, the Lightning's eighth defenseman next season, and could be just right for a playoff team looking for depth at the position. The Oilers, who play the Lightning tonight at the Ice Palace, are looking for defensemen. Ledyard said he has not heard any rumors, but added that the Oilers were interested in signing him before he joined the Lightning. "And I know they need some depth," he said. Dudley said most recent conversations have been with teams from the West. Teams with defensive needs from that conference include the Blues, Flames, Sharks and Canucks. "Let me put it this way," Dudley said. "You don't want to be calling a guy up from the minors that is a one-year pro for your insurance." © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
