Baker signs to play at Fla. Southern
By JOHN C. COTEY © St. Petersburg Times, published March 15, 2001 HUDSON -- Alison Baker, one of the most dominant volleyball players in Pasco County history, received an offer she couldn't refuse and committed Tuesday night to Florida Southern College. Hudson coach Linda McQuade confirmed the Moccasins, a Division II school in Lakeland that plays in the Sunshine State Conference, offered Baker a full scholarship to play next season. "She got a good deal," McQuade said. Baker, a 6-foot-1 middle-hitter with the Cobras, was considering South Florida, Saint Leo and some other small schools before deciding to become a Moccasin. Florida Southern has had one of the best Division II programs in the country. It has made 16 of the past 19 NCAA tournaments, including the past five, and has made the Elite Eight three times. The Moccasins haven't been as strong in recent years but went to the NCAAs last year after a 21-15 season. Baker will join former River Ridge setter Erin Pixton at Florida Southern. Pixton was second in assists last year for Hudson. In three seasons as a starter, Baker led the Cobras to unprecedented success. Hudson was 74-18 over that span, winning two district championships and advancing to the Class 4A championship match this season for the first time. Hudson lost to Clearwater. Baker was an easy choice for Sunshine Athletic Conference and Times Pasco County Player of the Year in 2000 after leading Hudson to district and regional titles. She set school records for kills with 226 and blocks with 225. She also emerged as a solid defensive player and led the Cobras in digs with 117. In November she was chosen to the Class 4A all-state first team. In 1999, she was a third-team selection. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
