NEW PORT RICHEY -- A bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Wednesday night when he was struck by a pickup truck while trying to cross U.S. 19.

The accident occurred just after 8 p.m. as the cyclist tried to pedal across the northbound lanes, just south of the Pithlachascotee River. The pickup truck tried to swerve but could not avoid the collision, police said. The cyclist, a middle-aged man whose name authorities would not release, was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Witnesses said the man appeared to have serious head injuries. Police still were investigating the accident late Wednesday.
