What with the evening hours and the relaxed atmosphere, gallery walks are becoming an increasingly popular way to view art. Tonight's artistic outing comes courtesy of the Tampa Gallery Association, currently 19 members strong, which has walks every third Thursday of the month from 5 to 8 p.m.
"Many people are unable to go to art events because galleries are open 9 to 5, the time that most are still working. With the extended hours we offer others more time to absorb and appreciate the local art culture," said Deb Stoberl of the Tampa Gallery Association.
"This also allows for a new awareness of the visual arts to the public. Every gallery carries something different, and some are offering special featured artists or shows for this event."
Among the participating locations, Nuance Galleries, a mainstay of the Tampa art community on S Dale Mabry Highway, is showing the works of Dutch artist Clemens Briels. His bold figures and bright colors have earned him a place as an official artist to the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. Artsiphartsi, on Kennedy Boulevard, is featuring Olga Ganoudis, a metalsmith and jeweler whose works are nationally known for their contrast of metals and stones.
The Tampa Museum of Art, whose third Thursday Art After Dark inspired the art walk, offers free admission during the 5 to 8 p.m. time slot. Patricia Fosnaught, assistant curator of education, will host a tour of the current show, "The Defining Moment: Victorian Narrative Paintings from the Forbes Magazine Collection." Pavel Petras, educated at the Akademia in Prague, will paint an original portrait of museum director Emily Kass. Petras is known for painting large portraits of subjects in single sittings. Live music and snacks will also be available.
"We are really excited about this," Stoberl said. "We have people who already commute from the surrounding areas to see us. But we hope that the art walks expand interest to new people and encourage everyone to come back."
