Down home with Hiatt
John Hiatt recorded last year's acclaimed Crossing Muddy Waters at the Linton, Tenn., home studio of engineer Justin Niebank, not far from the 96-acre farm where the singer-songwriter has lived with his wife and children since 1992. The acoustic CD sounds like an inspired back-porch jam session, a shot of bluesy, laid-back, folk-laced Americana from the talented musician perhaps best known for others' covers of his work, including Bonnie Raitt's Thing Called Love and the Eric Clapton-B.B. King collaboration Riding With the King. Hiatt will play a solo set Thursday night at Tampa Theatre. Tim Easton opens the show at 8 p.m. $25. Call (813) 274-8982.
The power of rock
At last month's Weezer gig, did the kids in the crowd get more excited by the show's stars, or by You Shook Me All Night, the AC/DC ode to fast women that blared over the Sun Dome's speakers during intermission? Picture thousands of alt-rockers with funky hair and dorky Clark Kent glasses, stamping feet and swiveling hips to the head-banging tune, a tune made by the kind of bad boys who would have beat them up in high school. Ah, a beautiful scene, testament to the unifying power of rock.
The classic Aussie rockers perform with Slash's Snakepit starring Slash, the guitarist from Guns N' Roses. Remember them? Come on. Think back. They used to rock, too.

Mr. 911
Of late, Andy Griggs has gotten more press for stealing that ambulance in Tallahassee than for his country music. Griggs, 27, and a bandmate told police they saw the keys in the vehicle's ignition and thought it would be fun to take it for a little joy ride.
Well, Griggs' idea and your idea of a good time may be different, but the cutie pie country crooner, whom Entertainment Magazine calls "a cross between Travis Tritt and Brad Pitt," assures fans You Won't Ever Be Lonely. Or bored.
