WESLEY CHAPEL -- A young man, whose name was not available Friday evening, suffered serious head injuries in a two-car accident Friday on State Road 54, rescue workers said.

Chet Altman said the man, who was driving a green 1993 Ford Mustang west on SR 54, turned left onto Foxwood Boulevard in front of his pickup, which he was driving east.

The two vehicles collided, he said.

Teresa Ehlers of Riverview was waiting on Foxwood Boulevard about 3 p.m.and said she saw the accident.

"It was just awful," she said. "The cars started sliding and turning."

The Mustang's driver was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital, Tampa, authorities said.

Altman and his passenger, Anthony Johnson of Tampa, were also injured, they said. Johnson was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Altman was taken to East Pasco Medical Center, where his condition was unavailable.

Man hospitalized after hit on head by falling limb

LAND O'LAKES -- A South Carolina man working to clear trees Friday morning from a heavily wooded backyard was hit on the head by a falling limb, authorities said.

George Russell, 18, of North Charleston, S.C., was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital, where his condition was not available Friday afternoon, but he was not in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was hit on the head about 10 a.m. by a 20-foot-long limb 4 inches in diameter, rescue workers said.

Some of Russell's co-workers were cutting a tree when a limb fell and either hit him or knocked loose another limb that hit him, said District Chief Mike Ciccarello of Pasco County Fire Rescue.

The workers would not comment Friday about the accident but said they were working for a tree service at the lakefront property near the east end of Carson Road.
