Springstead takes Invitational title

NEW PORT RICHEY -- One of these days, both rivals are going to show up at a meet in top form.

But so far the 2001 edition of the Springstead-Ridgewood rivalry has been a dud.

The Springstead boys ran away from the field at Friday evening's River Ridge Invitational at the Jim Valentine Athletic Complex, scoring 126.5 points against runner-up River Ridge's 106.

Depleted Ridgewood finished sixth, scoring 79.5 points without 11 athletes, including distance star Jim Vitale. It was the reverse of the Chasco Invitational earlier this month, when the Rams took second and the then-depleted Eagles were fifth.

"And we're still not at full speed," Springstead coach Fred Hudson said.

The Ridgewood girls scored 184 to beat second-place Lecanto's 94.

"Excellent drops in their times," Ridgewood coach Sue Vien said. "Again, it's our depth."

River Ridge's John Gilmore and Citrus' Myesha Hollis were named outstanding athletes of the meet. Gilmore won the 100-meters (10.82-seconds), the 200 (22.22) and anchored the first-place 4x100 relay squad of Richard Eagly, Andrew Massela and John Lambert. Gilmore also was third in the long jump.

Hollis won the 200 (26.37) and took second in the 100, long jump and triple jump.

Central's Alaya Smiley won the long jump (16-feet, 41/2-inches), the 100 (12.69) and helped 4x100 teammates Jaimie Costanzo, Tiffany Mobley and Leiko Mumsford to first-place (50.89).

Ridgewood's Nancy Edwards won the triple jump (34-91/2) and tied teammate Shawna Luikart in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches). The Rams' Jessica Penokie won the pole vault (8-6) and the 110 high hurdles (16.43). Lizzy Leigh won the 1,600 (5:32) and 800 (2:26.64).

Land O'Lakes' Christina Hansen won the 400 (59.44), and Alison Foster won the shot put (31-2). River Ridge's Melissa Tuccio won the 3,200 (11:58.19), and Lecanto's Kylene Colasanti won the 300 hurdles (48.37).

Citrus' C.J. Bryant won the 1,600 (4:29) and the 800 (1:58). John Rogers won the shot put (46-11), Michael Bass the 400 (51.80) and Tony Lyons the 3,200 (10:01.33). Springstead's Leon Hughes won the 110 hurdles (15.25), and Steve Ferguson the triple jump (42-6).

Hernando was led by Robert Donaldson's win in the high jump (5-10), Eric Williams in the long jump (20-111/4) and the 4x400 squad of Williams, Donaldson, Richard Fraiser and Derrick Mobley.

Central's Roberto Vasquez won the discus (133-11), Chris Dwyer the pole vault (11) and Adam Dixon, Joe Costanzo, Joel Crandall and Trever Scales the 4x800 (8:32).
