Display of T-shirts will remember abuse victims
CLEARWATER -- If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the 1,000 T-shirts on display today in Crest Lake Park will tell volumes. The T-shirts, part of the Clothesline Project of Tampa Bay, will be displayed at the park, on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, east of Highland Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shirts represent domestic-abuse victims.
In Pinellas County, law enforcement officers responded to more than 10,000 domestic dispute calls in the past year and about 900 women sought refuge at The Haven, run by Religious Community Services in Clearwater and CASA (Center Against Spouse Abuse) in St. Petersburg. Recent victims of violence can come and make their own T-shirts, free of charge. For information call Dale Shade, 784-6384.
CLEARWATER -- The Clearwater Chapter of the American Association of University Women will hold a shower for The Haven, a shelter for abused women and children, at 10 a.m. today at the Clearwater East Library, Drew Street and Belcher Road. Members are asked to bring sheets and pillowcases, towels, diapers, pots and pans, dishes and silverware. Also, Camille Hospadaruk will give a presentation on ancient musical instruments, including a dulcimer. For information call Ruth Samuel, 791-1216.
CLEARWATER -- The Clearwater Chapter of the Navy League will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Clearwater Yacht Club, 830 Bayway Blvd. Royce Carter, director of Veteran Services for Pinellas County, will speak. To reserve call 586-5037.
LARGO -- A makeup session for female cancer survivors who have suffered hair loss, loss of skin moisture and changes in skin tone, titled "Look Good, Feel Better," will be from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Sun Coast Hospital, 2025 Indian Rocks Road. A professional cosmetologist will demonstrate makeup and hairstyle techniques, skin care and the use of wigs, scarves and turbans. Participants will receive free makeup kits.
