Local ceremonies celebrate Greek Independence Day

CLEARWATER -- Today's events marking Greek Independence Day include a 1 p.m. flag-raising ceremony at Clearwater City Hall, 112 S Osceola Ave. The Rev. Father James Rousakis of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church will preside, and the event will feature local dignitaries, music and a 47-member music and dance group from Greece, the Philharmonic Orchestra and Tsoliades. After the ceremony, the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, Chapter No. 356, will hold a luncheon at 2 p.m. at the AHEPA chapter at 1156 Jasper St., Largo. Along with the chapter's 175 members, local officials, musicians and 2000 Greek Olympic gold medalist Michail Mouroutsos are expected to attend.
