Ailing Gorham propels Bulls past Tulane 5-4

South Florida starter John Gorham allowed five hits and retired 20 in a row at one point as the Bulls shut down Tulane 5-4 on Saturday in New Orleans.

"I can't say anything more about that performance," USF coach Eddie Cardieri said. "The kid has the flu and he just bowed up and pitched an outstanding ballgame for us on three days' rest."

After allowing consecutive singles in Tulane's two-run second inning, the junior from Armwood High retired the next 20.

Gorham, who woke up with the flu Friday, left the game in the ninth after allowing a two-run homer to Jake Gautreau that sliced USF's 5-2 lead to 5-4.

David Richtberg earned the bullpen's first save of the season, retiring all three batters he faced. USF is 9-13, 1-1 Conference USA; the Green Wave is 18-3, 1-1.

Dario Frigo of Italy took the lead of the Paris-Nice race by winning the next-to-last stage, a steep 6.2-mile time trial on the outskirts of Nice. SKIING: Sweden's Magdalena Forsberg won the 10-kilometer pursuit at Oslo, Norway, for her 14th World Cup victory this season. ... Per Elofsson won the overall World Cup title in cross-country skiing despite finishing eighth in a 15-kilometer classic-style race at the Swedish Ski Games in Falun. ... OBITUARY: Henry Kaelarne, who set two world records and won a bronze medal at 5,000 meters in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, died at 88 in Stockholm, Sweden.
