Ex-Dolphin RB Collins' long-delayed trial begins today

FORT LAUDERDALE -- After 15 months in jail and numerous delays, former Dolphins running back Cecil Collins is going to trial on burglary charges.

Collins was arrested in December 1999 and charged with breaking into the apartment of a neighboring couple, Ronald and Tina Nolte. Collins said he "just wanted to go look" at Tina Nolte as she slept.

Ronald Nolte says he caught Collins in the bedroom, chased him from the apartment through a window and confronted him before Davie police arrived and arrested him.

Collins pleaded innocent. His jury trial begins today at Broward County Courthouse.

The 24-year-old already was on probation after pleading guilty to two felony counts of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling in Louisiana. Because of the probation, Collins has been held in the Broward County Jail since his arrest and has not been allowed bail.

The Dolphins released him two months after his arrest.

He faces five to 15 years in prison if convicted on the burglary charges, plus up to four years on a charge of violating his Louisiana probation.

REP. SWILLING: Saints linebacker Pat Swilling has won a runoff election for the Louisiana House of Representatives from eastern New Orleans. Swilling beat computer consultant Terrie Guerin. Final but unofficial returns from their race Saturday gave Swilling 3,957 votes to 3,290 for Guerin. Both Swilling and Guerin are Democrats.

BEARS: In an effort to upgrade its defensive line, Chicago has turned its attention to Bills tackle Ted Washington. Washington, an unrestricted free agent who turns 33 on April 13, plans to visit with the team today. Washington was voted to his third Pro Bowl in four years last season, when he had 21/2 sacks and 86 tackles for the AFC's third-ranked defense.

XFL: Rage loses first

LOS ANGELES -- Tommy Maddox threw two touchdowns and ran for a third as the Xtreme handed the Rage its first loss 31-6 and knocked out Orlando's starting quarterback for the season.

Jose Cortez added 29- and 31-yard field goals in the first half and Saladin McCullough ran 3 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown for the Western Division-leading Xtreme at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Eastern Division-leading Orlando lost quarterback Jeff Brohm for the season when linebacker Juan Long sacked him on the first play of the second quarter, separating his right shoulder. Brohm completed 5 of 10 passes for 46 yards.

Brian Kuklick replaced Brohm and went 17-for-24 for 224 yards and three interceptions. He spoiled the shutout by running 3 yards for a touchdown with 10:17 left.

Maddox, who scored from 1 yard, completed 19 of 25 passes for 199 yards.

CHICAGO 25, SAN FRANCISCO 19: LeShon Johnson ran for two touchdowns, and the Enforcers withstood the Demons' second-half surge. John Avery ran for 110 yards, and Kevin McDougal completed 11 of 14 passes for 175 yards and a score before an announced Soldier Field crowd of 11,428. Dorian Brew's interception with less than a minute left stopped San Francisco's final drive.
